Equiano and the Enlightenment

Lunar Society. Equiano, a former slave, published a memoir describing the terrible, unjustifiable wrongs that happened while he was enslaved.

This walk focuses on the British biases towards African Culture, Birmingham’s link to the transatlantic slave trade and the contradiction and hypocrisy of Birmingham’s facilitation of the Enlightenment.

Prior to the walk there will be an opportunity to view a mini pop-up display developed by young people, about the life of Equiano.

The walk starts and ends at Soho House. Soho Avenue, Handsworth, B18 5LB.

This event is part of the Lunar Society’s project ‘Birmingham’s Commonwealth Heritage – the Lunar Legacy’ funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund. The walk is delivered by Black Heritage Walks Network.

Tickets £11 (+£1.20 fees). Tickets can be booked from the BHWN website.
